The Airbnb Turnover Cleaning Checklist Every Host Needs

The difference between a 4-star and a 5-star Airbnb review almost always comes down to cleanliness. Guests tolerate a lot. They will forgive a slightly outdated kitchen or a shower with low water pressure. They will not forgive a dirty bathroom or hair on the pillowcase. Cleanliness is the baseline expectation and the fastest way to lose a guest forever.
Several of our community members are Airbnb hosts. Through trial, error, and a lot of 4-star reviews that should have been 5s, they developed a turnover cleaning checklist that covers everything. This is the same checklist used by Ready Rental Cleaning, the cleaning service built by one of our members specifically for short-term rental operators in Los Angeles.
Kitchen
The kitchen is where most guests form their first impression of cleanliness. Start with all dishes washed, dried, and put away. Wipe down every counter surface, the stovetop, and the inside of the microwave. Clean the inside of the fridge and remove any food left by previous guests. Run the dishwasher empty with a cleaning tablet to eliminate odors. Check the garbage disposal for buildup. Replace the dish sponge. Restock dish soap, paper towels, and any provided coffee, tea, or snacks.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are the number one source of negative cleanliness reviews. Scrub the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind the bowl. Clean the shower or tub thoroughly, paying attention to grout lines, the shower door track, and the drain. Hair in the drain or on the shower wall is an instant 4-star review. Wipe down the vanity, mirror, and all fixtures until they shine. Replace all towels with fresh, folded sets. Restock toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Check under the vanity for anything left behind.
Bedrooms
Strip all bedding. Every sheet, every pillowcase, every duvet cover. Replace with freshly laundered sets. Check the mattress protector for stains and replace if needed. Fluff and arrange pillows. Vacuum the entire floor, including under the bed and in closets. Wipe down nightstands, lamps, and light switches. Check all drawers for items left behind. Make sure the closet has enough hangers and the luggage rack is clean and accessible.
Living Areas
Vacuum all floors and mop hard surfaces. Wipe down all flat surfaces including coffee tables, shelves, and entertainment centers. Clean the TV screen with a microfiber cloth. Check the couch cushions for crumbs and lost items. Wipe down light switches and door handles. Check all light bulbs and replace any that are burned out. Arrange throw pillows and blankets neatly.
Final Walkthrough
Before leaving, do a complete walkthrough as if you were the guest arriving for the first time. Open the front door. What do you see? What do you smell? Check the thermostat is set to a comfortable temperature. Make sure all lights work. Verify the WiFi password is visible and correct. Check that the lockbox or smart lock is functioning. Take photos of every room and send them to the host.
Photo documentation is not optional. It protects the host from false damage claims and gives the cleaner a record of their work. Professional services like Ready Rental Cleaning include photo documentation as a standard part of every turnover. If your current cleaner does not do this, it is time to switch.
The Cost of Cutting Corners
A 4.2-star rating instead of a 4.8 can drop your occupancy rate by 20% or more. On a property generating $3,000 per month, that is $600 per month in lost revenue. Over a year, that is $7,200 lost because someone skipped the shower drain or left streaks on the bathroom mirror.
Professional turnover cleaning pays for itself. A $180 clean that protects your 5-star rating is the single best investment you can make as a host. Not new furniture. Not better photos. Clean rooms. That is the foundation everything else is built on.
